A Chinese man lived for 8 years with a long metal stick stuck in his throat before doctors in a Chinese hospital in Dalian were finally able to successfully remove it, according to what was published by Oddity Central.
As announced by Dalian Central Hospital, the 46-year-old man recently went to the hospital suffering from severe throat pain and a constant feeling of a foreign object, prompting the doctors to perform precise examinations that revealed a surprise.
The X-ray showed a 12-centimeter metal object stuck inside the patient's throat. When asked, he explained that he accidentally swallowed this stick about 8 years ago while eating, without taking any serious medical action at that time.
Despite experiencing initial symptoms such as choking and intermittent pain, his condition did not deteriorate significantly at first, which led him to live with the situation for years, especially after being warned of the risks of surgical intervention at that time.
Over the years, the man got used to the discomfort, until his condition recently worsened, and the pain increased, prompting him to urgently seek medical help.
The doctors explained that the presence of a foreign object of this size inside the throat for a long period could have led to serious complications, such as tissue damage or blood vessel injury, yet the examinations did not show any serious bleeding or ulcers until the moment of intervention.
The medical team decided to perform a minimally invasive surgery through the mouth to avoid cutting the neck, and they indeed managed to extract the entire metal stick without significant complications.
After the operation, the patient's condition improved significantly, with symptoms gradually decreasing over a few days, while the hospital published the case details as a warning of the risks of neglecting foreign objects inside the body, emphasizing the necessity to seek medical help immediately in such cases.
