Persistent Tiredness After Sleeping May Indicate Anemia in Women

Khaberni - Doctors warn against ignoring the persistent feeling of fatigue in women, even after getting enough sleep, indicating that it may be a sign of iron deficiency anemia, a common condition that may go undiagnosed for years.

General practitioner in the British National Health Service, Dr. Amir Khan, said in his program that anemia is one of the most prevalent conditions among premenopausal women, due to blood loss during menstruation, pointing out that the most common symptom is persistent fatigue and feeling unrefreshed after sleep.

He explained that many women interpret this fatigue as being due to their daily busyness and lifestyle pressure, while it may be a medical reason that requires examination and treatment, emphasizing that neglecting symptoms can lead to health complications, including increased risk of infection and weakened immunity.

According to the British National Health Service (NHS), anemia caused by iron deficiency is the most common worldwide, and its causes vary from heavy menstrual cycles and pregnancy to poor nutrition.

Other symptoms that may appear include headaches, pale skin, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, and some less common signs such as restless legs syndrome.

Doctors confirm that diagnosis is made through a simple blood test at the general practitioner, followed by determining the appropriate treatment, which often includes iron supplements for up to six months with periodic monitoring of blood levels.

Experts also emphasize the importance of an iron-rich diet, such as dark leafy vegetables, legumes, red meats, dried fruits, and reducing tea and coffee intake which may hinder iron absorption.

Doctors advise women experiencing persistent fatigue to consult a doctor to assess the condition and not consider it just everyday exhaustion.
