Jordan Farmers Association reveals the reason behind the recent tomato price increase

Khaberni - Moaz Al-Balawneh, the Secretary-General of the Jordan Farmers Association, stated on Saturday that the recent weather conditions have caused a drop in tomato production, leading to an increase in its price, additionally noting that the planted quantities of tomatoes were also low.

Al-Balawneh explained on Al-Mamlaka TV that most vegetable prices dropped significantly today, pointing out that the rise in temperatures has led to increased production, which in turn has reflected in a decrease in prices.

He pointed out that there are several factors controlling the production quantity which directly affect the prices, including weather conditions, the planted areas by farmers, and diseases and pests, stating that these factors are beyond control.

He emphasized that the farmer cannot monopolize agricultural products, saying "There is no such thing as monopoly in the agricultural sector, and tomatoes cannot be stored for a week or two," as they spoil quickly.

He noted that there are some inappropriate behaviors through the supply chains from the farm to the consumer that may lead to price increases, but the farmers are not responsible for them.

Al-Balawneh called for reducing the number of supply chain links between the farm and the consumer, pointing out that farmers are obligated to deliver their goods to the central market, which increases the sequence of agricultural product supply to the consumer.
