Iran threatens to close the Strait of Hormuz again if the US blockade continues

Khaberni - The Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, warned on Saturday that Iran would close the Strait of Hormuz again if the United States continues its blockade of Iranian ports.

Ghalibaf said in a post on the platform "X": "With the continuation of the blockade, the Strait of Hormuz will not remain open," adding that passage through the strategic passage will be based on a "defined route" and "with Iran's approval".

Tehran announced yesterday, Friday, the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz for the remaining period of the ceasefire, following Israel's agreement to a truce with Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, said that "in light of the ceasefire in Lebanon, the passage of all commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz will be fully available for the remainder of the ceasefire period," noting that it will be "through the coordinated route as announced by the Iranian Ports and Maritime Organization".

For its part, Iranian state television, quoting a military official, clarified that the passage of military ships through the Strait of Hormuz "remains prohibited".

Araghchi did not specify which deadline he was referring to. A two-week ceasefire agreement between Iran and the United States entered into effect on the night of April 7-8, while the ceasefire in Lebanon started on the night of Thursday-Friday, for a duration of ten days.

The Iranian armed forces had closed the strait to most ships with few exceptions since the outbreak of war with the United States and Israel on February 28.

In response, Washington imposed a blockade on Iranian ports on Monday, aimed at preventing Tehran from exporting its oil, and confirmed on Friday that it will continue until a final agreement is reached.

The first round of talks between the United States and Iran in Pakistan last weekend did not lead to a peace agreement, but U.S. President Donald Trump said that a second round could be held soon.
