Epstein Scandal Again Starmer Faces Calls for Resignation

Khaberni  - British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing significant pressure from the opposition to force him to resign, following reports revealing his appointment of a former British Ambassador to the United States to his position, despite his connections with the late billionaire Jeffrey Epstein, who was convicted of sex crimes.

British opposition parties have called for Starmer to resign for his approval of former US Ambassador Peter Mandelson's appointment to that position in January 2025, despite a negative assessment by the security vetting authority, according to the latest reports in this case.

Opposition Leader Kimi Badenoch said on the X platform, "Starmer betrayed national security." Also, Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey said, "If Starmer has misled Parliament and lied to the British people, he must go."

Calming the Storm

In an attempt to calm the political storm and resist increasing resignation demands, Starmer confirmed today, Friday, that he had not received any official notification or notice regarding the former British Ambassador to the United States receiving a negative assessment before his appointment period.

This was stated during a press statement from France on the sidelines of his participation today in an international meeting led by Paris and London with the participation of about 40 countries, as part of a new international initiative to protect freedom of navigation, amid the American blockade on the Strait of Hormuz.

Labour Prime Minister said, "I was not informed that Mandelson had not yet received approval after the security investigation. No minister was informed. Downing Street was also not informed, and this is absolutely unacceptable."

Decline in Popularity

Peter Mandelson was dismissed in September when his connections with Epstein were revealed in documents published in the United States. Currently, the police are conducting investigations with him on suspicion of leaking government documents to Epstein.

This case has weakened the popularity of the British Prime Minister and led to the resignation of Morgan McSweeny, Starmer's office director, who pushed for Mandelson's appointment as ambassador to Washington.

During the 2024 elections, the British Prime Minister achieved the largest majority obtained by the Labour Party in modern history, but he faces questions and doubts about his judgment and ability to govern.

Local elections in England, and others in Scotland and Wales, are to be held in 3 weeks, and observers expect Keir Starmer and his party to suffer electoral losses.
