The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, Kaja Kallas, stated in Rabat on Thursday that the European approach has clearly shifted towards considering “genuine autonomy” under Moroccan sovereignty as the most realistic and feasible solution to resolving the Moroccan Sahara issue.
Kallas's statements came during a working visit to Morocco, invited by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita. She emphasized that the European Union invites all parties to engage in a political process without preconditions, based on the autonomy proposal submitted by Morocco, with the aim of reaching a final settlement of the conflict.
According to a joint statement issued following the meeting between the two sides, a position supported by the 27 member states of the European Union, the European Union welcomed Morocco's readiness to detail how the autonomy project will be implemented within its national sovereignty.
The statement also praised the adoption by the UN Security Council of Resolution 2797 (2025), which supports the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his personal envoy to launch negotiations based on the Moroccan autonomy proposal.
This European development has significant political importance, as it comes just days ahead of an anticipated meeting of the International Security Council on the matter, in the context of an escalating international dynamic supporting the Moroccan position.
This European stance comes amid growing support from several European countries, individually, for Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara and for the autonomy initiative, reflecting an increasing trend within the European Union to support a final resolution of the conflict under Moroccan sovereignty.
