Iran Welcomes Ceasefire Announcement Between Lebanon and Israel

Khaberni - The Iranian Foreign Ministry welcomed, on Thursday evening, the announcement of a ceasefire in Lebanon between Israel and Hezbollah.

The spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Ismail Baqaei, stated that Tehran welcomes the ceasefire in Lebanon, adding that "the cessation of war in Lebanon was part of the ceasefire understanding between Iran and the United States mediated by Pakistan".

He emphasized that Iran had "from the beginning, during its talks with various regional and international parties... stressed the necessity of establishing a simultaneous ceasefire throughout the region, including Lebanon."

The spokesperson added that Tehran emphasizes the necessity of a complete Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon.

It is noteworthy that both Israel and the United States have confirmed that the Lebanese track is separate from the Iranian track in the negotiations.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed to a ten-day ceasefire starting Thursday at 21:00 GMT, noting that this agreement "will include Hezbollah" which is backed by Iran.

In his turn, Netanyahu explained on Thursday in a televised address that Israel agreed to the ten-day truce but would maintain a "security zone" ten kilometers deep along the border in southern Lebanon.

He pointed out that Israel had set two conditions for the ceasefire: the disarmament of Hezbollah, and a permanent peace agreement "based on strength."

Netanyahu confirmed his rejection of the two conditions set by Hezbollah, namely the complete Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territories, and a ceasefire based on the principle of "quiet for quiet."
