Khaberni - On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong became the first human to step on the moon during the Apollo 11 mission, accompanied by Buzz Aldrin. During the historic journey, Armstrong spent more than 21 hours on the moon's surface, during which he conducted scientific experiments, took photographs, and collected rock and soil samples.
Due to the need to reduce weight, NASA had to leave some equipment and items on the moon's surface, among them a small bag known as the "McDivitt Purse", designated to temporarily store tools while working in space.
Astronauts named the bag "the Purse" due to its design resembling a small handbag, while the name "McDivitt" refers to commander James McDivitt from the Apollo 9 mission, who proposed the idea of having a lightweight bag used in zero-gravity environments to temporarily store tools.
This bag was supposed to be left on the moon, but contrary to the original plan, it was brought back to Earth. Many years after Armstrong's death in 2012, it was found inside his house during his wife's check of his possessions, only to discover that it contained original materials from the Apollo 11 mission, which caused great surprise.
According to records, NASA had initially planned to leave some equipment on the moon, but later changed their decision. This equipment included various tools weighing about 10 pounds, among them a safety rope intended for use in emergencies during spacewalks, but it was used in an unexpected way inside the spacecraft during a rest period.
A 16mm recording camera, which was meant to document the separation moments and moon landing, was also discovered. It was supposed to be left behind as well, but it returned to Earth after the decision was changed at the last minute.
When the Smithsonian museum team examined these pieces, they confirmed they were a genuine part of the Apollo 11 mission, and that they had not been clearly recorded in the archives for many years, making their discovery a rare scientific and historical surprise.
This discovery has shed light on some previously unknown details of the first human journey to the moon, where scientific accuracy mingles with coincidence, leaving some secrets hidden for decades before reemerging.
