Qatar confirms its readiness for any nuclear emergency in the region

Khaberni - The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change in Qatar revealed a comprehensive system for radiation monitoring and dealing with any potential leakage, including early warning systems, real-time data analysis, and direct coordination with local and international entities, ensuring a quick response and containment of risks.

In this context, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Abdullah Al Subaie, in a conversation with "Qatar Television", confirmed that the environmental situation in Qatar is stable and reassuring, with no recorded indicators of concern.

The minister explained that the ministry relies on advanced monitoring systems that cover air and water quality, radiation, and oil spills, where data is collected automatically and immediately from stations spread throughout the country and analyzed in specialized operation rooms to make appropriate decisions.

He noted that the air quality monitoring network includes 48 stations, including 20 on roadsides, in addition to water monitoring stations in regional areas, all equipped with modern technologies that provide accurate data supporting a rapid response to any unnatural changes.

Regarding radiation, he mentioned that there is an independent system that continuously monitors its levels on land and sea, supported by a pre-prepared reference map to define the normal rates, allowing the detection of any deviations immediately.

Al Subaie added that in case any abnormal rise is recorded, the early warning system is activated, and the nature of the change is verified, whether it is limited or transboundary, with the situation assessed in coordination with the relevant entities, and preventive actions taken in cooperation with the civil defense.

On the regional and international level, he pointed out that the system includes data exchange with the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, in addition to cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency which provides immediate notifications in case of nuclear incidents, enhancing readiness and response.

On another note, Al Subaie revealed the use of advanced simulation models that link environmental data with weather conditions, to predict the path of radiation over the next 48 hours, supporting proactive decisions to reduce risks.

On the transparency front, the minister confirmed the availability of monitoring data to the public via the air quality platform, which offers direct indicators reflecting the environmental condition and its levels compared to the permitted limits.

Regarding development, he referred to the ongoing updates to monitoring systems and the expansion of their networks, alongside investing in national teams, through scholarship programs in specialized fields, including nuclear engineering.

The minister concluded by affirming the stability of the environmental situation in the country, warning against succumbing to rumors, and emphasizing the importance of relying on official sources for information.
