Khaberni - The Swedish government has accused hackers linked to Russian entities of trying to carry out a cyber-sabotage attack targeting one of the thermal power stations in the country in 2025, as a new indicator of the escalating cyber threats to critical infrastructure in Europe.
Civil Defense Minister Karl Oscar Bohlin explained that the attack occurred early last year, noting that the perpetrators have ties to Russian intelligence and security services, but he also confirmed that the operation failed thanks to the protective systems installed within the facility.
He added that the groups loyal to Russia, which previously focused on denial-of-service attacks, are now moving towards more dangerous attacks aimed at causing actual damage, not just temporary disruption of services, according to a report published by "Tech Crunch".
This incident is part of a series of increasing attacks targeting the energy and water sectors, where hacking entities aim to have a direct impact on public services and critical infrastructure.
In Poland, accusations have been made against Russia for attempting to target the electricity network in December 2025, while Norway experienced a breach incident at a dam, which led to the opening of its gates and the leakage of large amounts of water before control over the system was regained.
The city of Lviv in Ukraine was subjected to a cyberattack at the beginning of 2024, causing heating cuts to hundreds of apartments for several days during the winter, in an incident that security reports suggested was linked to Russian entities, without absolute confirmation.
These developments recall the attacks that targeted the Ukrainian electricity network in 2015, which caused widespread outages, reflecting the escalation of the use of cyberspace as a battlefield between nations, with attacks moving from digital nature to direct impact on the ground.
