Khaberni - Social media sites buzzed with video clips capturing moments of astonishment experienced by residents of the "Hexin Xinghucheng" residential complex in Shantou, China, after a woman scattered large amounts of cash from her apartment window on a high floor, turning the street into a scene of scrambling among stunned onlookers.
The incident began at exactly 10:00 AM on April 14, when the woman appeared on her balcony several times, each time carrying bundles of cash estimated at about 100,000 units, throwing them into the air "as if she was disposing of trash".
This bizarre scene continued for about 20 minutes, completely stopping traffic below the residential tower and resulting in Hong Kong dollar bills of 500 and 1000 denominations falling from above.
Eyewitnesses reported that there was a significant scramble, with some people trying to climb trees to retrieve stuck bills, while local media described the scene as "a real-life Robin Hood story" but with a dramatic ending, estimating the total amount scattered to be about one million Hong Kong dollars.
Meanwhile, the "Zhuzhi Street" office issued a statement clarifying that the neighborhood committee, in coordination with the police and civil defense, immediately intervened to control the situation.
Investigations revealed that the woman, described as being in an unstable mental state, acted in this manner due to severe emotional stress caused by a "malignant disease" afflicting a family member.
The authorities confirmed that specialized teams succeeded in calming the woman and providing the necessary support, while the police helped residents collect the scattered cash to return it to the family, noting that most of the amounts had already been recovered.
The authorities concluded their statement by urging the public to remain calm and act rationally in such situations, and to resort to official entities instead of engaging in scrambling activities that may threaten public safety.
