Khaberni - Yellow taxi drivers have called for the necessity to allow them to install surveillance cameras inside their vehicles to document the details of their daily trips transporting passengers.
The drivers say that they sometimes face disputes with passengers of various kinds, and having surveillance cameras would provide protection for both drivers and passengers.
The head of the Taxi Offices and Public Vehicles Owners Union, Mohammad Al-Hadeed, said on Wednesday in statements to the "Kingdom" channel that the recordings from the cameras inside medium transport vehicles will be linked with official entities.
He talked about the union working on an app for the yellow taxi that includes vehicle tracking and driver evaluation.
He added that no driver could delete the recordings from the cameras inside the vehicles.
He emphasized that the recordings will not be available to the drivers but will be under the supervision of competent official authorities, such as the Transport Sector Regulatory Authority, Amman Secretariat, and the Directorate of Public Security, ensuring privacy protection and preventing misuse of the recordings.
"There will be coordination with the Traffic Administration and the Licensing Administration for installing the cameras and their types," according to Al-Hadeed who said that the cameras are for the protection of both the driver and passenger.
Al-Hadeed clarified that the union supports the direction towards installing cameras and tracking systems, affirming that the primary goal is to protect both the driver and the passenger, and not to infringe on privacy.
