Above Our Houses a Flag in Our Hearts a Nation Pulsing in Aspirations and Hope Arab in its Shade and Radiance

Written : Sheikh Mohammed Fnaykher Al-Bri (Abu Riyadh)

Jordanian Flag Day is considered a precious national occasion that embodies the meanings of pride and dignity, as it is not just a celebration, but an homage to the symbolism of the Jordanian state and its rich history. In Jordan, April 16th of each year is designated as Flag Day, a moment of pride cherished by Jordanians for their flag that has never been lowered.

The roots of the Jordanian flag delve into modern Arab history, having been derived from the flag of the Great Arab Revolt that began in 1916. The Jordanian flag was officially adopted in its current form on April 16, 1928, under the Basic Law of the Emirate of Transjordan. Jordanians have drawn from the Hashemite legacy and successive Islamic civilizations for their flag colors, representing their voice in liberation and revival.

The Jordanian flag carries deep political and historical dimensions, where its colors symbolize the following: black for the Abbasid state, white for the Umayyad state, green as a symbol of the Fatimid state and for the Hashemite family, and the red triangle combines these colors representing the Great Arab Revolt and the Hashemites. The seven-pointed star is the most distinctive feature of the Jordanian flag, representing the Al-Fatiha from the Quran.

The importance of this day lies in renewing the allegiance to the nation and the Hashemite leadership, emphasizing the people's rallying around their flag, fostering national identity and the values of good citizenship in the hearts of students, youth, and every Jordanian citizen, to realize that the flag is the "title" that unites them. It's also a day to remember the sacrifices of the Arab Army and security forces who died to keep this flag flying high.

Jordanian National Identity and Symbolism of Sovereignty

The Jordanian flag is closely linked to the Jordanian national identity; it is the symbol that accompanies Jordanians everywhere, from international forums to mountain summits, and from schools to battle fronts. The flag unites Jordanians of all different backgrounds under one canopy that transcends all differences, making the seven-pointed star a heartbeat for every Jordanian home.

Jordanian Flag Day is a call for every citizen to reflect on the values of greatness and defense. The flag, designed by the ancestors and protected with the blood of their fathers, is the legacy carried by the young today. Long live the Jordanian flag, proudly flying high, a symbol of freedom and security under the Hashemite leadership.
