Khaberni - The global travel platform "Booking.com" is facing one of its largest security crises, following a widespread data breach. The incident, which has triggered a global alert, has left the sensitive information of millions of users at risk, amid technical warnings of potential fraud waves targeting travelers who have recently used the platform.
According to specialized reports, external parties gained access to information related to customer bookings, prompting the company to act quickly by forcing users to reset the personal identification number (PIN) for current and previous bookings as a precautionary measure to reduce risks.
Despite sending emails to users to inform them of the incident, the company has so far refrained from disclosing the number of accounts that may have been affected, which has increased the state of anticipation and anxiety, according to the "Tom’s Guide" site.
"Booking" is one of the largest travel platforms globally, providing over 30 million accommodations, and serving hundreds of millions of users, making any security breach within it have far-reaching consequences.
Confusion and doubts among users
Interestingly, the notifications did not come through the official app of the platform, but only through email, which raised doubts about the credibility of the messages, especially amid the spread of phishing attempts.
But a spokesperson for the company confirmed the validity of the incident, indicating that they detected "suspicious activity" which was contained immediately upon discovery, with urgent measures taken to secure the affected accounts.
How to protect yourself after the breach?
Given the likelihood that a large number of users are affected, digital security experts recommend taking immediate steps to secure accounts, most notably:
Change the (PIN) and passwords associated with the account immediately.
Ignore any suspicious or unreliable email messages.
Do not download any attachments from unknown sources.
Ensure that incoming messages come from official platform addresses.
Use reliable antivirus protection software.
It is also advisable to review the Spam folder, with extreme caution of phishing messages that might exploit the incident to deceive users.
Will the company compensate affected users?
Companies that suffer similar breaches usually resort to offering free identity protection services, but so far "Booking.com" has not announced any such steps, leaving users with the responsibility of protecting their data themselves.
