Khaberni - A recent study monitors hundreds of thousands of accidents related to household cleaners among children under five, identifying the main causes and types of injuries.
A recent statistical study revealed that 240,862 children, aged five years or younger, were involved in accidents related to household cleaners in the United States, during the period from 2007 to 2022, reflecting the scale of risks associated with the use of these materials inside homes.
These results were part of a study published by the scientific journal «Pediatrics», specialized in pediatric medicine. A research team from the «Abigail Wexner Research Institute» at the Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, analyzed the accidents resulting from exposure to household cleaners among children under the age of five, requiring their admission to emergency departments between 2007 and 2022.
According to the «German News Agency», the researchers relied on examining an electronic database of the United States incident monitoring system and found that laundry detergents and bleach were the most frequent causes of these accidents, accounting for 30.1% and 28.6% respectively.
The injuries sustained by the children varied, with poisoning cases constituting the largest proportion at 64%, followed by chemical burns at 14.1%, and skin inflammations at 11.2%, which reflects the variety of risks arising from these substances.
The data also showed that 33% of the accidents were related to the use of detergent pods, while liquid spray bottles accounted for 28.2%, and containers holding cleaning fluids accounted for 19.7% of the total cases.
The website «Health Day», specializing in medical research, quoted Doctor Rebecca McAdams from the «Abigail Wexner Research Center» saying in a statement that incidents associated with liquid cleaning packages have declined over the past years, but they remained the primary cause of child injuries resulting from handling cleaners during 2022.
