Student Powers at the University of Jordan Appointing 18 in the Student Union Affects Democratic Representation

Khaberni - The student powers at the University of Jordan criticized the recent amendments to the student union election regulations, considering that including an appointment principle that exceeds 18% fundamentally undermines the principles of democratic representation.
The student powers stated in their statement that the amendments approved by the Dean of Student Affairs "clash with the will of the students," and impose a new reality that may lead to organizing protest movements and boycotting the electoral process if they are not reversed.
They added that the amendments contradict the outputs of the political system modernization committee and aim to "weaken student activism and democratic representation," pointing out that they have eliminated the criterion of the number of students in allocating seats in colleges and reduced the proportion of the general list by about 22%.
The student powers indicated that they have dealt with the file "with high responsibility," by holding continuous meetings and preparing an alternative amendments draft, which was presented to the Dean of Student Affairs and the university presidency, but these proposals have not yet received any official response.
The student powers firmly rejected the principle of appointment, calling on the university administration to reverse the amendments and return to the previous regulations that ensure fair representation for the students.
They also hinted at boycotting the student union elections if the amendments are maintained, affirming their right to organize peaceful movements to confront them, and demanding serious dialogue after the elections to develop the regulations in a way that enhances democratic participation on campus.
They emphasized that the students' right to choose their representatives is an "inherent right," holding the university administration responsible for the consequences of continuing to ignore students' demands.
