Khaberni - The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the ambassador of the Republic of Iraq, Safia Al-Suhail, due to the continuing "blatant attacks and threats" that targeted the Kingdom and Gulf states through drones launched from Iraqi territory.
During the delivery of the protest note to the Iraqi ambassador, the ministry's Undersecretary for Political Affairs, Ambassador Dr. Saud Al-Saati, emphasized the Kingdom's condemnation and denunciation of the attacks coming from Iraqi territory towards the Kingdom and Gulf states, stressing the "importance of Iraq dealing responsibly with these threats and attacks, and reiterated the Kingdom's absolute rejection of the violation of state sovereignty and attempts to threaten the security and stability of the region, confirming that the Kingdom will take all necessary measures to defend its security and protect its territories."
This summons comes amidst the escalation of cross-border attacks by Iraqi armed factions allied with Iran on energy facilities and civilian infrastructure in Gulf countries.
In late March 2026, six Arab countries including Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan issued a joint statement condemning these attacks as a blatant violation of national sovereignty and international law.
The statement also held the Iraqi government accountable for controlling the armed groups operating within its borders, affirming the right of the targeted countries to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter.
Media reports indicated that signals reached Baghdad from Riyadh about tightening measures on Iraqis wanting to enter the Kingdom, with a decline in the level of official communication due to what was described as "the extensive influence of armed factions within state institutions."
The Saudi Ministry of Defense has repeatedly announced the interception and destruction of ballistic missiles and drones directed towards the Eastern Region rich in energy facilities.
