Data shows that fortified milk leads the way, providing about 117 international units per cup, and is a popular choice that also supports bone health with its calcium content.

Plant-based milks, such as soy or almond milk, provide similar or slightly higher amounts, which may reach about 119 international units in some types, with an added benefit of being suitable for vegan diets.

 

Diverse Options According to Needs

Data suggest that kefir, especially if fortified, can provide more than 100 international units per serving, along with benefits linked to digestive health.

Some ready-to-drink protein beverages also contain high levels of vitamin D, which might reach around 332 international units per package, though this varies significantly by brand.

Mushroom broth also stands out as a potential plant-based source, especially when using mushrooms exposed to ultraviolet light, as it can contain considerable amounts of the vitamin, though its level may be affected by the preparation method.

 

Recommendations suggest that adults need about 600 international units daily, making diversifying sources of fortified beverages a practical way to reach this goal, especially for those who do not get sufficient sunlight exposure.

However, relying solely on these beverages may not be sufficient, as quantities vary by product, and vitamin D absorption is influenced by other factors such as overall diet.
