Khaberni - Dr. Natalia Sermays, a specialist in dermatology, hair and cosmetics, points out that a misconception has recently spread on the Internet suggesting that not washing hair for a long time results in consequences like graying and balding.
According to her, many have taken this information as a call to action, turning to extreme methods. Some have started washing their hair three times a day, while others avoid washing it until the last moment for fear of "damaging hair follicles," noting that this panic is premature.
She says, "This is actually a myth. In other words, hair should be washed as needed, and each person has their own needs. This does not lead to graying or balding."
According to her, if a person reduces their hair washing frequency, or conversely, starts washing it after a long break, they may notice strands of hair falling on their arms. This issue is no more concerning than the baldness myth. However, this phenomenon is due to laws of physics, not disease.
She says, "This may contribute to hair accumulation, and for this reason, it may seem like the hair is falling out more than before after washing."
In response to a question about how many times hair should be washed, she points out that it depends on the scalp type and its oiliness. People with oily skin can wash their hair daily, while those with dry skin are advised to wash it once every 3-4 days. The basic rule: wash your hair when it's dirty, not according to a specific schedule.
Dr. Mariat Mukhina, a dermatologist, also points out that the frequency of hair washing depends on individual needs. For example, in the case of a dry scalp, it is sufficient to shampoo it every five days, whereas a greasy scalp might require daily washing. It is also recommended to rinse hair with running water daily without using any products regardless of scalp type.
