Discovering an Unexpected Effect of Sweets on the Nervous System

Khaberni - Researchers report that consuming sugar before resting can decrease the body's ability to handle stress and achieve complete relaxation.

The International Journal of Psychophysiology indicates that the study involved 94 adults, with one group receiving a drink containing glucose, while the other group was given water. Afterwards, the participants either received a relaxing massage or simply rested. All participants reported feeling calm, but physiological indicators revealed a more complex picture.

The researchers note that relaxation techniques stimulated the activity of the parasympathetic nervous system, responsible for recovery. Participants who consumed sugar showed an increase in sympathetic nervous system activity - responsible for stress and the mobilization of the body's resources. As a result, the body remained in a state of heightened arousal.

According to them, this suggests that sugar may hinder the body's ability to fully transition into a state of rest, reducing the effectiveness of practicing meditation or massage. In other words, a person might feel relaxed, but their body continues to respond as if in a state of stress.

The researchers advise that to enhance recovery better and reduce stress on the nervous system, it is recommended to avoid foods high in sugar before relaxing.
