Khaberni - The official Iranian news agency (IRNA) confirmed this Thursday the death of Kamal Kharrazi, the head of the Iranian Foreign Relations Council, who succumbed to injuries from a raid on his home last week during the war.
Mohammad Reza Aref, the First Vice President of Iran, said that Kharrazi's assassination "is proof of the enemy's fear of our reason and honorable diplomacy," according to his statement.
Last week, the Iranian press reported that Kharrazi (81 years old) was injured during the attack that targeted his home, and his wife was killed at the same location.
Kharrazi was a prominent figure in Iranian decision-making circles, having been among the senior advisors to the late Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, and continued in his advisory role after the leadership transition to Mojtaba Khamenei, in a move to maintain the structure of advisors without changes.
He also served as the Foreign Minister between 1997 and 2005, and prior to that, he was Iran's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, as well as heading the IRNA agency in the 1980s.
During the war that erupted on February 28, American-Israeli airstrikes targeted a large number of Iranian officials, both in diplomatic and military positions.
At dawn on Wednesday, US President Donald Trump announced the approval of a ceasefire with Iran for two weeks through Pakistani mediation, yet he conditioned it on the full and immediate opening of the Strait of Hormuz and that the ceasefire be reciprocal.
Negotiations between Tehran and Washington are expected to begin in Islamabad on Saturday.
