After the Truce Will Trump Be Isolated

Khaberni  - Calls are increasing within the US Congress to impeach President Donald Trump, following his recent escalation towards Iran, which culminated in his threat that "an entire civilization will die tonight", before later reaching a temporary truce.

According to reports published by "Axios", "The Hill", and "The Guardian", the corridors of Congress have witnessed an unprecedented wave of demands to use constitutional mechanisms to remove Trump from office, either through the 25th Amendment or through parliamentary impeachment procedures.

Calls for Trump's Impeachment

Several Democratic lawmakers have explicitly called for the activation of the 25th Amendment, which allows the Vice President and a majority of cabinet members to declare the president incapacitated, and lawmakers including Representative Diana DeGette, Senator Ed Markey, and Representative Yasmin Ansari, have called for the initiation of impeachment proceedings, considering Trump's threats as a danger to global security and potentially serious violations.

By Tuesday, reports indicated that more than 50 Democratic representatives and Senate members had directly called for the president’s removal, a step that reflects the escalating political pressure within the legislative body.

In a notable development, criticism is no longer confined to Democrats, as The Guardian referenced positions from within the Republican camp, including Representative Marjory Taylor Greene, who called for the activation of the 25th Amendment, describing the recent escalation as "evil and insane".

Additionally, media and political figures associated with the "America First" movement, such as Tucker Carlson, joined in the criticism, arguing that engaging in an open confrontation with Iran contradicts Trump's previous commitments to ending "endless wars".

The debate in Washington is centered around two main paths: the first is the 25th Amendment, which allows the transfer of presidential powers to the vice-president if the president is deemed unable to perform his duties, a procedure that requires internal administration consensus.

White House Response

The second path involves parliamentary impeachment, which begins in the House of Representatives and requires a simple majority, then needs two-thirds of the Senate's approval for dismissal.

Axios reports suggest that the chances of implementing any of these paths remain limited given the need for support from Republicans in Congress, or the occurrence of a split within the administration itself, which does not seem feasible at the current time.

Meanwhile, the White House has rejected these calls, with spokesperson Davis Engel describing the criticisms as "pitiful", considering that Democrats have been trying to impeach Trump since before he took office.

The recent crisis has brought to the forefront a broader debate about Trump’s management of foreign affairs and the impact of his sharp statements on international stability, at a time when military and diplomatic pathways intersect in dealing with Iran.
