Warning for Diabetic Patients Magnesium Deficiency May Threaten Your Vision

Khaberni - A recent medical study showed that low levels of magnesium in the blood may be linked to an increased risk of diabetic retinopathy, one of the most common complications of type 2 diabetes.
Researchers analyzed data from 17 studies involving more than 2200 people, and found that patients with diabetic retinopathy had significantly lower levels of magnesium compared to diabetic patients who did not suffer from retinal damage. This difference remained consistent regardless of geographic location, study design, or measurement methods, which reinforces the reliability of the discovered relationship.

An additional analysis showed that magnesium deficiency is more pronounced in the advanced stages of the disease, especially in cases of proliferative retinopathy, suggesting that magnesium levels may not only be linked to the occurrence of the disease but also to its progression.
Researchers believe these results are due to the vital role of magnesium in regulating insulin action, energy metabolism, and vascular protection. Magnesium deficiency may lead to increased oxidative stress and inflammation, contributing to retinal vessel damage. Based on this, magnesium can be considered a potential indicator of the risk of these complications.

Health experts confirm that magnesium is an essential element for maintaining body health, as it supports heart functions, contributes to energy production, and enhances the health of the nervous system and brain.
