Khaberni - The Land Transport Regulatory Authority announced the tendering of a project to implement Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) on buses operating as part of the government support program for official university lines, in a strategic step aimed at improving the quality of public transport services and enhancing operational efficiency, in line with the directions of the digital transformation and the development of the transport system in the kingdom.
The project aims to create a qualitative leap in student transport services by providing safer, more reliable and regular means of transportation, contributing to user satisfaction and promoting reliance on public transport, alongside enhancing the travel experience by reducing travel time and improving operational efficiency and adherence to timetables.
The project includes equipping (376) medium buses with intelligent transportation systems, covering (29) lines serving the official universities, where it involves implementing an integrated system of digital solutions including an electronic payment system using smart cards and QR technologies, a bus tracking system via satellites (GPS), camera surveillance systems (CCTV) to enhance safety, in addition to passenger information systems that provide real-time data, and a financial clearing house system (Clearing House) to ensure the integration of operations between various parties.
It is expected that the project implementation will begin during the third quarter of the year 2026, after completing the contractual and technical procedures, in preparation for the pilot operation and then full operation according to the approved schedule, thereby enhancing the efficiency and reliability of the transport services provided to students.
This project confirms the authority's commitment to adopting the latest global technologies in the transport sector, contributing to achieving more efficient and sustainable public transport, and enhancing the quality of services provided, especially in the student transport sector which is one of the fundamental pillars of the urban transport system in the kingdom.
