Jordan Atomic Energy Commission clarifies radiation levels in Jordan

Khaberni - Khaled Toukan, President of the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission, said that the commission and the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission monitor regional developments around the clock through advanced early warning systems, ensuring quick response to any potential emergencies, confirming that radiation levels in the kingdom are within natural and safe limits.

This was stated during a meeting with the Energy and Mineral Resources Committee in the Senate presided by Senator Farouq Al-Hiyari on Monday to discuss the updates of the strategic plan of the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission in light of the challenges posed by the current regional circumstances.

The meeting focused on ways to enhance readiness and ensure facing any challenges that may arise in light of the current regional developments, especially in terms of radiological protection requirements, safety, nuclear security, environmental protection, and safeguarding human health and properties from pollution hazards and exposure to ionizing radiation.

Toukan reviewed the main plans related to the commission's strategy and the precautionary measures that have been taken in the current circumstances, which include enhancing the radiation monitoring systems spread across various regions of the kingdom, increasing the readiness of specialized technical staff, intensifying coordination with related national entities, as well as continuous cooperation with international organizations concerned with nuclear safety.

On his part, Senator Al-Hiyari stressed the necessity of continuing to enhance the level of readiness and ensuring the availability of general safety conditions, radiological protection, and nuclear safety and security requirements, emphasizing the importance of integrating efforts among various national institutions to ensure the protection of citizens and the environment.

The meeting reiterated the importance of raising public awareness about radiological safety issues, enhancing national emergency plans, in line with the best international practices and standards, and praised the commission’s efforts, plans, and its pivotal role in monitoring the radiative and nuclear sector in the kingdom.
