Khaberni - Scientists from the University of Alicante in Spain have found that excessive intake of iron and zinc supplements may be associated with a decline in cognitive abilities.
The scientists studied health and dietary data from hundreds of participants suffering from obesity, and conducted tests to assess their mental capacities.
The analysis, after considering influencing factors such as age and educational level, showed that increased iron intake is linked to poorer performance in tasks requiring logical thinking and cognitive flexibility in overweight adults, while increased intake of zinc supplements may increase the likelihood of poor performance in tasks relying on working memory.
The findings raise questions about the impact of excessive intake of some dietary supplements on cognitive health, especially in people suffering from obesity.
The scientists confirmed that these results are preliminary and need to be affirmed through long-term clinical studies and research based on biomarkers. Health experts also warned that indiscriminate use of dietary supplements may lead to adverse effects, especially when combining products containing the same ingredients without paying attention to total dosages.
