Rains and storms kill 121 people in Afghanistan and Pakistan over two weeks

Khaberni - Heavy rains and floods have led to the death of at least 121 people over two weeks in Afghanistan and Pakistan, according to officials in the disaster management departments in both countries on Saturday.

Afghanistan has been experiencing heavy rainfall since the end of March, leading to floods and landslides that have affected homes and crops.

The spokesperson for the Afghan Disaster Management Authority, Mohammad Yusuf Hammadi, told AFP on Saturday "Since March 26, 77 people have died and 137 have been injured across the country due to the floods and rains."

He added that in the last 48 hours alone, 26 people died and 48 were injured due to the rains, floods, and lightning.

In neighboring Pakistan, 44 people have died after heavy rains in the past weeks, according to officials.

In the northern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 32 people have died since March 25, while 12 have died in Balochistan (southwest) since March 20, according to regional disaster management authorities AFP reported.

Heavy snowfall and rains have resulted in the deaths of more than 60 people in Afghanistan in January.

Afghanistan has repeatedly experienced floods, landslides, and storms, especially in remote areas with fragile infrastructure. The country, one of the poorest in the world after decades of war, is affected by climate change, which scientists say causes harsh weather conditions.
