What is the effect of coffee on decisionmaking

Khaberni - A recent study showed that drinking coffee at night can lead to changes in behavior, increased impulsiveness, and riskier decisions, confirming that the timing of caffeine consumption plays a crucial role in these effects.

The researchers in their study, conducted by the University of Texas, USA, relied on experiments using fruit flies, a common scientific model for studying behavior due to the similarity of some of its neurological mechanisms with humans, as published by "Science Daily".

During the study, the flies were exposed to caffeine at different times of the day, before measuring their response to annoying stimuli and their ability to stop moving.

The results showed that the flies that consumed caffeine at night exhibited more impulsive behavior, continuing to move despite uncomfortable circumstances, indicating a decline in self-control.

However, the same effects were not recorded when caffeine was consumed during the day, reinforcing the hypothesis that these changes are related to the biological clock.

The researchers noticed gender differences, as females were more affected by caffeine compared to males, despite similar levels of the substance in their bodies, pointing to additional biological factors that control the response.

The researchers considered that the results of the study might have important implications for humans, especially those who rely on caffeine at night, such as shift workers or those in the medical sector, asserting that the matter requires further human studies for a more precise understanding.
