Khaberni - Gennaro Gattuso has left his position as the technical manager of the Italy national football team "by mutual consent" today, Friday, three days after the failure of the "Azzurri" team to qualify for the World Cup for the third consecutive edition.
The Italian Football Federation announced Gattuso's dismissal in a statement in which it thanked the local coach "for his dedication and passion" during his nine-month tenure.
For his part, Gattuso said: "With a heart wrung with pain, for failing to achieve the goal we set for ourselves, I consider my experience at the helm of the Italy national team's technical unit to have ended."
The hopes of the Italy national team to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, to be held this summer in the USA, Mexico, and Canada, were dashed last Tuesday, after the team lost on penalty kicks to their host, the Bosnia and Herzegovina team, in the European playoff final qualifier for the World Cup.
Gattuso's departure comes a day after the resignation of the president of the Italian Football Federation, Gabriele Gravina, alongside Gianluigi Buffon, the president of the "Azzurri" team delegation.
The loss to Bosnia has added to the suffering of the Italy national team, four-time World Cup champions, after being eliminated by Sweden and North Macedonia consecutively, in the World Cup qualifiers for the 2018 and 2022 editions.
Gattuso took over as coach of the Italy national team replacing Luciano Spalletti who was dismissed last June, and the team was already in crisis after its defeat against Norway in its opening match of its group in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The Italy national team regained its balance after achieving a streak of consecutive victories in six matches before suffering another defeat against Norway last November, finishing second in its group and qualifying again for the playoffs.
