Khaberni - Press reports have revealed that FIFA is seriously considering a historic proposal that entails increasing the number of teams participating in the 2030 World Cup to 64 teams, instead of the 48 teams accredited in the 2026 edition.
According to The Touchline on the "X" platform, the idea was proposed within the organization and is gaining increasing support, especially from the South American Football Confederation, which aims to make the 2030 edition extraordinary on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the tournament.
Reports indicate that discussions are still ongoing within FIFA, amidst a clear division in opinions, as supporters of the proposal believe that it will give a greater number of teams the opportunity to participate in the global event, and enhance the celebratory character of the historic edition.
On the other hand, there are serious concerns related to the compressed match schedule and a significant increase in the number of matches (which could reach up to 128 matches), in addition to the potential impact on the quality of competition and player fatigue.
Furthermore, some football officials opposed the idea, considering that the new expansion might harm the balance of the game, especially since the 48-team system has not yet been fully implemented in the World Cup.
So far, a final decision has not been made, but it is certain that the idea of expanding the 2030 World Cup to 64 teams is now strongly on the discussion table within FIFA, with increasing momentum in the recent period.
