The Silent Unit Why do children feel their voices are unheard

Khaberni - Loneliness among children has become an increasing issue, according to psychologists, pointing out that children often feel unheard and misunderstood, even when surrounded by others.

Psychological consultant Mandy Simmons states that many children and youth describe a feeling of loneliness, but it is not limited to being alone; rather, they feel their "voices are unheard and misunderstood." They feel not only isolated, but undervalued and unlistened to.

Generally, the statistics indicate that one-third of the youth worldwide do not feel a sense of belonging to their local community, while the percentage feeling loneliness in the age group 18-24 years is around 70%.

Simmons explains that the cause is rarely lack of care, but rather reflects the modern reality of today's families, with parents busy with multiple responsibilities and the quick shift in conversations towards providing solutions or reassurances. Social media also contributes to creating pressure and comparison that diminish real communication.

Keenan points out that reducing opportunities for traditional social interactions and the limited freedom in playing and moving around have increased children’s feelings of isolation.

To alleviate loneliness, specialists recommend paying more attention to behaviors rather than focusing solely on the problem, creating time for emotional connection, practicing active listening, and fostering regular family moments free from distractions such as phones and devices.

They also encourage organizing play meetings and informal activities to support social interaction, affirming that genuine listening and acknowledging a child's feelings allow them to build self-confidence and feel a sense of belonging and connection.
