Khaberni - The remote residents of the Orkney Islands woke up to an unprecedented "yellow invasion", after a technical error in the local "Tesco" store converted a usual order of 380 kilograms of bananas into a massive shipment consisting of 380 boxes, which is equivalent to 38,000 fruits.
Normally, Tesco would return the surplus bananas to the mainland, but strong winds disrupted ferry operations during the weekend.
A Tesco spokesperson said that the larger store has now decided to donate the extra bananas to the local community and schools.
Paula Clark, Tesco's community enhancement officer, posted an appeal on social media saying: "We have mountains of bananas.. literally, would any local group like to come to the store and pick up a box for free? You can head to the customer service desk to collect it."
In the comments, representatives from groups eager for bananas such as nurseries, football clubs, and the Stromness community fridge requested that a box be reserved for them.
Island residents shared practical tips with each other on social media, including making banana bread and slicing and freezing bananas for use as an addition to breakfast meals.
Another Tesco spokesperson said: "Due to the high demand for bananas at our store in Kirkwall, colleagues are inviting local schools and community groups to collect the fruit and redistribute it locally."
This food surplus comes at a time when the Orkney Islands have been crowned one of the healthiest places to live in the UK for both men and women.
Boys born between 2022 and 2024 here are expected to enjoy good health until the age of 72.9, while women exceed that, with their good health expected to last until the age of 74.1.
The Shetland Islands are also very healthy, with women there maintaining good health until the age of 70.8, while men until the age of 68.3.
