Lebanon Early decisions to cancel the International Cedars Festivals spark controversy

Khaberni - The early decisions regarding the cessation of some artistic activities in Lebanon, amid the escalation of the current regional war, have sparked a wide wave of controversy and questions about the fate of the cultural scene in the country, especially after the announcement of the decision to suspend the International Cedars Festivals for the summer of 2026, which led to increased speculation about the possibility of stopping all artistic events, whether theatrical or musical, in light of the deteriorating security conditions.

These questions came after the announcement by the Committee of the International Cedars Festivals to postpone the events of the anticipated 2026 edition, with the suspension of ticket sales, against the backdrop of the Israeli war on Lebanon.

The decision has sparked controversy on social media platforms, as many viewed it as an initial indicator of the possible complete halt of artistic activities indefinitely, especially after previous attempts to revive the artistic movement following a long recession witnessed in 2024.

According to knowledgeable Lebanese media sources, it was confirmed that the current conditions do not allow for any artistic activities, especially in the fields of music and theater, explaining that the postponement of the International Cedars Festivals is a clear indication of a general trend to suspend the rest of the events due to security considerations and concern for citizens' safety.

The same sources added that the artistic scene in Lebanon remains unclear at the current time, amid the escalation of the war on Lebanon and the current regional tensions, indicating that despite the known persistence of Lebanese artists to continue creating even in the darkest circumstances, the current escalation and the expansion of regional tension make it difficult to continue organizing any artistic activity, in their words.

They also mentioned that a theatrical movement had been anticipated to reactivate this sector, by attracting artists who had been absent from the scene due to a weak drama production, but the recent developments have prevented this, and the same sources considered that any attempt to hold concerts or theater performances at this time would be an uncalculated risk, confirming that the suspension of artistic activities in the coming months comes as part of national coordination between unions and producers to ensure public safety and sector stability, according to the media sources.

The official page of the International Cedars Festivals had announced, in a statement issued recently, that the decision to postpone was due to difficult circumstances Lebanon is undergoing, pointing out that maintaining the safety of the public remains a priority, alongside preserving the celebratory character that has always distinguished this cultural event.

The committee apologized to the public, artists, and partners, adding that it is possible to refund the tickets for the opening and closing concerts, which were scheduled for the artist Wael Kfoury on the twenty-fifth of July, affirming that the decision stems from national responsibility. It also expressed hope to resume the festival in the summer of 2027, if security conditions improved, to restore the festival's role as a platform for creativity and celebrating Lebanon's cultural life.
