Khaberni - Italy has refused to grant permission for US military aircraft to land at the Sigonella base in Sicily before they head to the Middle East, as reported by a source close to the matter on Tuesday.
The war in the Middle East
The daily newspaper Corriere della Sera reported that some American bombers were scheduled to land at the base located in eastern Sicily before heading to the Middle East, without specifying when they were supposed to land.
According to Reuters, the source, who was not authorized to speak to the media and preferred not to reveal his identity, also did not specify the number of aircraft involved or when Rome refused to grant permission.
Corriere della Sera added that the permission was not granted because the United States had not requested authorization, and the Italian military command had not been consulted as required by the treaties governing the use of American military facilities in the country.
Opposition parties from the center-left have called on the government to prevent the United States from using bases in Italy to avoid involvement in the conflict.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's right-wing government has said it will seek parliamentary authorization if any such requests are made.
