Khaberni - An American study has found that inexpensive children’s clothing purchased by some parents to meet their growing children’s apparel needs may contain high levels of lead, potentially posing serious health risks.
The researchers confirmed during a meeting of the American Chemical Society in Atlanta that the fabric used in some of these inexpensive garments may contain high levels of lead, and that the danger of these clothes increases especially since some infants or small children may chew on the sleeves or collars of these clothes by nature while wearing them, posing a risk to their health.
Researcher Christina Avila from Marian University in Indianapolis, USA, says: "Not only children are at risk of lead in these clothes, but some adults also have the habit of chewing on clothes while wearing them, which could pose a danger to them."
The research from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirms that lead leads to health problems in the brain and nervous system and may affect growth processes, and that even the smallest amount of lead entails extreme danger to children.
In the course of the study, the researchers tested 11 shirts from 4 companies specializing in selling inexpensive clothes, varying in colors from red to crimson, orange, yellow, gray, and blue, and found that all the tested clothing contains an amount exceeding the health-permitted level of lead, which is 100 per million parts of the materials used in textile manufacturing.
The researchers also found that lead levels are higher in clothes dyed with bright colors such as red and yellow.
According to the study published by the online site "HealthDay," which specializes in medical research, the researchers concluded that habitual chewing of clothes containing high levels of lead could lead to increased lead levels in children's blood, requiring them to receive medical care.
