Khaberni - Unknown thieves stole more than 12 tons of Kit Kat chocolate bars during a cargo transfer between Italy and Poland, quickly making the news a topic for widespread interaction on social media platforms.
Nestlé confirmed the theft, clarifying in an official statement that 413,793 chocolate bars disappeared while being transported from a factory in central Italy to their final destination in Poland.
The timing of the incident was notable, coinciding with the final days before Easter, one of the busiest seasons for chocolate sales in Europe.
Nestlé employs its trademark slogan in its official response
In a statement to "Euronews", a company spokeswoman noted that the thieves "took the Kit Kat message more seriously than they should have", in a clear reference to the brand's famous slogan "Have a Break".
However, the company's own statement carried a more serious message, alerting that the theft of goods during transport has become "an escalating phenomenon affecting companies of all sizes", pointing out that the criminal schemes used in these types of operations are becoming more complex and sophisticated.
Nestlé announced that it chose to disclose the incident publicly, aiming to raise awareness about this type of crime, while also assuring that consumer safety is not compromised and that the stock was not affected.
Italy and an unusual season of thefts
This incident follows shortly after another theft targeting artworks from an Italian museum estimated to be worth millions, putting Italy repeatedly in the spotlight for theft news in recent times, although the nature of the stolen items was distinctly different this time.
The internet reacts strongly
The news opened the door to a wave of comments on social media platforms, where users brought up various cinematic and television references, including the movie "Scarface" and the series "Breaking Bad", while the novella and movie "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" dominated many comments, in what followers described as one of the most humorous and comedic theft news in recent times.
A user posted a poignant image without comment, featuring a picture of "the suspect", leaving it to followers to fill in the gaps with comedic comments, while one joked that Kit Kat had become "the new currency".
