How does protein deficiency affect the physical abilities of the elderly

Khaberni - A study conducted by scientists from the University of Sharjah showed that protein deficiency can cause a decrease in physical capabilities among the elderly.
During the study, the scientists analyzed data relating to the health status and diet of more than 38,000 people from 27 European countries. The results showed that people who consume lower amounts of protein-rich foods are more prone to reduced muscle strength and difficulties in performing daily activities, and are more likely to encounter problems with walking and climbing stairs, as well as difficulties in performing routine tasks such as getting up from a chair or going shopping.

The relationship was not identical between genders; according to the study, protein deficiency has a greater impact on muscle strength in men, while it is more noticeably reflected in the mobility of women. The most severe effects were observed in individuals over the age of 66, which the scientists attribute to the body's declining ability to use protein to maintain muscle mass as it ages.
The researchers emphasize that the study does not prove a direct causal relationship, but it does indicate the important role of nutrition in maintaining independence in old age. They say that combining a sufficient intake of protein with physical activity can slow down age-related deterioration in strength and mobility.
