Khaberni - French Foreign Minister Jean Noel Baro said on Monday that he requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council following the "very serious incidents" that targeted United Nations peacekeeping forces in Lebanon, which resulted in the death of an Indonesian.
Baro said, "Such attacks near United Nations peacekeeping sites are unacceptable and unjustified," adding that France demands "a thorough investigation into the circumstances of these tragedies."
The "UNIFIL" force announced the death of two of its members in an "unidentified explosion" in southern Lebanon, following the killing of a third member by a projectile explosion near the border with Israel.
The force said in a statement on Monday, "Two peacekeepers from the UNIFIL forces were killed today in a tragic incident in southern Lebanon, following an unidentified explosion that destroyed their vehicle near Bani Hayan. A third soldier was seriously injured, and a fourth suffered injuries," noting that "this is the second fatal incident in the past hours."
The force announced the start of an investigation "to determine the circumstances of the incident."
