The computer no longer needs them Why did screensavers disappear

Khaberni - Screensavers had a widespread presence on computers in the past, where they would automatically appear when the device was left unused. Over time, this feature gradually disappeared from daily use, raising questions about the real reasons behind this decline.

In the early days of computing, especially with old CRT screens, screensavers were necessary to prevent what is known as screen burn-in, a problem that occurs when a static image is left for a long time, leaving a permanent mark on the screen. For this reason, screensavers were designed to display moving images or black screens to reduce this risk.

With the advancement of technology and the emergence of LCD and LED screens, this problem no longer existed in the same way, which significantly reduced the actual need for screensavers.

Energy-saving technologies
In addition to the disappearance of screen burn-in issues, modern energy-saving technologies have reduced the importance of screensavers. Instead of displaying animated graphics that consume energy, modern systems automatically turn off the screen or put the device into sleep mode.

This shift not only helped reduce electricity consumption but also contributed to extending the lifespan of devices, making screensavers an impractical choice compared to modern alternatives.

Entertainment feature
Over time, screensavers transformed from a functional tool to an entertainment or aesthetic element. Some used them to display personal photos, animated drawings, or even information like time and news.

Yet, these uses were not sufficient to maintain their popularity, especially with the availability of high-quality screens and other customization options within operating systems.

Are they completely gone?
Despite their decreased usage, screensavers have not disappeared entirely. They are still available in some operating systems, and are sometimes used for specific purposes such as displays in stores or for privacy protection when leaving the device.

However, they no longer play the vital role they used to in the past, and have become more a part of computer history rather than a technological necessity.

Natural evolution
Ultimately, the disappearance of screensavers reflects a natural course in the evolution of technology, where tools that are no longer needed vanish.

While they were once an essential element in computer usage, they are now just a memory from a previous technological era.
