AlBataineh Now is Not the Time to Amend the Social Security Law

Khaberni – Former Minister of Labor Nidal Al-Bataineh said, during his attendance at a parliamentary labor committee meeting to give his opinion on the Social Security Law project, that the timing of proposing amendments to the law is not politically appropriate, given the current circumstances and the expected controversy around it.

Al-Bataineh pointed out that addressing the social security issue is necessary, but it requires gradual implementation and avoiding surprising the citizens with short-term decisions.

He explained that the law amendment should occur in two stages; the first involves the governance of the social security institution by separating it from the Minister of Labor and enhancing its independence, a phase that enjoys consensus. The second stage includes details that need more discussion, involving various stakeholders from workers, employers, academics, and civil society institutions.

Al-Bataineh affirmed that the second phase should be postponed until after the current regional circumstances have abated, emphasizing that a time of wars requires closing controversial internal files.

He noted that the worker is the foundation of the production wheel, and their opinion should be heard, as they are aware and capable of balancing their interests with the interests of the institution.
