Energy and Minerals Safe Strategic Reserves and Mandatory Minimum of 40 Supply at Fuel Stations

Khaberni - The Sustainability Association, in partnership with the Energy and Mineral Regulatory Commission and a select group of representatives from concerned bodies in the renewable energy sector in the Kingdom, held a meeting on Monday to discuss the current challenges and strategic opportunities in the energy sector amid the fast-evolving regional changes.

Dareed Mahasneh, chairman of the board of the Sustainability Association, pointed to the pivotal role the Association plays as a national platform fostering constructive dialogue between the public and private sectors, affirming the Association's commitment to supporting policy development and enhancing the investment environment in the energy sector, thereby contributing to the consolidation of sustainability and supply security concepts.

Ziad Al-Saaydeh, chairman of the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission, confirmed that the energy sector is undergoing a strategic transformation driven by the growth in the contribution of renewable energy sources within the electricity mix, which reflects the success of national policies in attracting quality investments in clean energy projects.

Regarding supply security, Al-Saaydeh confirmed the availability of a strategic reserve that covers the needs of the Kingdom, alongside mandating supply stations to maintain a minimum inventory level of no less than 40%, noting that the commission continuously monitors the readiness of the oil derivatives system and the execution of an integrated distribution plan to ensure the continuous and efficient supply to various sectors without interruption.

He revealed that regional repercussions have contributed to increasing the costs of the energy sector by about 100 million dinars per month since the regional crisis, while also confirming that adjusting electricity tariffs for consumers is not on the table at this stage.

In the area of legislative infrastructure development, Al-Saaydeh affirmed that the commission had reached advanced stages in preparing regulatory frameworks for energy storage systems, aligning with best international practices and opening the field for quality investments in this vital sector.

Representatives from the private sector stressed the importance of developing energy storage systems and their role in enhancing the efficiency of the electrical grid and promoting reliance on renewable energy, expressing their readiness to enter into investment projects as soon as the regulatory framework is completed.

They emphasized the importance of building on this institutional dialogue and enhancing it as a strategic partnership between the public and private sectors, which contributes to elevating the readiness of the energy sector in Jordan and enhancing its ability to adapt to regional challenges and consolidating its sustainability and efficiency over the long term.
