Khaberni - The African football scene is witnessing an escalation in tension between the Moroccan and Senegalese federations following an incident that has sparked widespread controversy after the Senegal national team was allowed to showcase the title of the 2025 African Nations Cup
and the Senegal national team was permitted to display the continental title at the "Stade de France" in France.
The Moroccan authorities considered this step a legal and regulatory overreach, especially amid ongoing debate about the title's legitimacy, prompting the Moroccan Football Federation to consider taking legal action against the event organizers.
According to the information circulated, the Moroccan move is based on what it describes as "impersonating a champion," which could open the door to civil lawsuits, possibly including demands for financial compensation, and perhaps even demands for the confiscation of the disputed cup.
The repercussions do not stop here; possibilities loom for imposing continental or international sanctions if a breach of regulations is proven, either by the Senegalese federation or the organizing bodies, based on the disciplinary laws adopted by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) and the Confederation of African Football, which allow for fines or sports-related sanctions in such cases.
Three days before the incident, the Moroccan federation had sent an official communique to the French authorities, urging them to prevent the holding of the display ceremony using the cup, however, this request was not complied with, which contributed to the escalation of the crisis.
In a parallel move, the Moroccan federation appointed a judicial commissioner to attend the Senegal vs. Peru match, where all details associated with the incident were documented, from the organizing body, through the symbols and emblems used, to the display of the cup in front of the spectators.
It is expected that a comprehensive report will be submitted to FIFA's Ethics Committee, including explicit accusations of regulation breaches, with anticipation of potentially escalating the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which may have the final decision in this dispute, amid concerns about the impact of this crisis on the relationships among the African football federations in the upcoming period.
