Prime Minister Resort to Setting Price Ceilings for Basic Commodities

Khaberni - Prime Minister Jafar Hassan said on Sunday that there will be a resort to setting price ceilings for basic commodities, pointing out that there are unjustified increases in prices that exceed the real costs of the product with high percentages.

He added that the government will impose the strictest possible penalties, under the law, on violators and hoarders of goods, including financial fines of up to 10,000 dinars, in addition to closing non-compliant establishments, with imprisonment sometimes being the punishment, depending on the violations caught and related to hoarding and opportunistic practices in these circumstances.

He confirmed that the government is working on monitoring the available stock quantities and maintaining supply chains, and intervening when necessary for direct importation from the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and the military and civilian institutions.

Hassan added that the government will provide support to the military and civilian institutions to supply the required quantities of basic and provisioning materials at a suitable price for citizens.

He emphasized that the strategic stockpile of commodities and energy is secure and reassuring for sufficient periods; pointing out that the Aqaba port is operating at full capacity and with high efficiency, routinely receiving ships, and is today a source of confidence for many Arab countries that have begun benefiting from it to secure goods and merchandises to them.

He spoke about how the government has put in place alternative precautionary measures related to land transport, and benefiting from ports in Arab countries on the Mediterranean Sea in case the crisis continues or extends, to facilitate transport to and from them for import and export purposes at the lowest possible costs.
