State Sovereignty in the Context of Regional Challenges

Khaberni -  Amid the accelerated transformations witnessed in the region, the concept of state sovereignty re-emerges as one of the most prominent issues imposing itself on the political and legal discussion table, especially with the increasing challenges related to borders, airspace, and territorial waters.
In this context, the program "Open Meeting" broadcasted by the Jordanian Radio, prepared and presented by colleague Najood Almajali, covered this vital dossier in a special episode that hosted Dr. Ramzi Al-Dabbagh, an expert in international law, discussing the legal dimensions and limits of state sovereignty under international law.
Dr. Al-Dabbagh emphasized during the meeting that state sovereignty is considered a fundamental principle in international law, granting the state full right to control its terrestrial, maritime, and aerial territories, noting that this right is guaranteed by international treaties, most notably the United Nations Charter, which ensures non-interference in the internal affairs of states.

He added that protecting the airspace and borders falls not only within the rights but also the duties of the state, which is responsible for securing its territories and maintaining their safety, while at the same time complying with international laws and treaties regulating relations between states.

Regarding sovereignty over embassies, he clarified that diplomatic mission premises are subject to the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, where the inviolability of the embassy is preserved, yet it does not constitute territory of the sending state as some believe, but remains within the territory of the host state with special immunity.

The discussion also touched upon current regional challenges, which impose a new reality on the concept of sovereignty, amid armed conflicts, foreign interventions, and technological developments that have affected the nature of traditional borders.

The guest confirmed that maintaining state sovereignty in this era requires a precise balance between compliance with international law and the ability to protect national interests, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation and dialogue as means to prevent conflicts.

This argument comes at a time when there is an increasing need to enhance legal awareness among the public, especially regarding the rights and duties of states, in a world where sovereignty is a flexible concept influenced by political and security variations.

From the Jordanian Radio airwaves, the discussion remains open on state sovereignty... between legal texts and real-world challenges, in a world that recognizes steadiness no less than it imposes continuous adaptation.
