Khaberni - A new government law in Indonesia has come into effect, prohibiting children under the age of 16 from accessing digital platforms.
Upon the announcement of the new law earlier in March, Indonesian Minister of Communications and Digital Affairs, Meutia Hafidz, reported that it would affect about 70 million children in Indonesia, which has a population of about 280 million people.
Indonesia has become the first country in Southeast Asia to ban children from owning accounts on social media platforms, following measures taken by Australia last year in the world's first social media ban for children as part of a campaign for families to regain power from tech giants and protect their teenage children.
