Khaberni - A study by scientists from the National University of Singapore has shown that caffeine is capable of restoring social memory impaired by sleep deprivation, which aids in recognizing and distinguishing familiar individuals.
The scientists say in a report published in the journal of Psychopharmacology and Neurology, that the hippocampus in the brain plays a crucial role in memory and learning processes, and contains an area that significantly contributes to the formation of social memory, as well as playing a role in regulating the sleep-wake cycle.
The study results showed that sleep deprivation weakens the communication between neurons in this area, and impairs social recognition memory.
Taking caffeine before sleep deprivation restores communication to normal levels. They say, the results affirm the essential role of sleep in supporting cognitive health and memory.
