Khaberni - The Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority has decided to close the Petra Archaeological Reserve to visitors tomorrow, Thursday, as a precautionary measure in light of prevailing and expected weather conditions.
The Commissioner of the Archaeological and Tourism Affairs of the Authority, Engineer Yazan Mahadin, said that the decision to close was made after careful monitoring of weather reports indicating that the area will be affected by heavy rainfall that could lead to continued flash floods tomorrow, especially in low-lying areas and narrow passages within the archaeological site.
Mahadin emphasized that the safety of visitors and employees is a top priority for the Authority, noting that taking such precautionary decisions aims to avoid any potential risks and to preserve lives and property.
He added that the authority's staff had raised the level of readiness early on, and intensified inspections of flood channels and stormwater culverts within and around the reserve, as well as throughout all Petra Region communities, alongside establishing emergency plans to address any developments that may arise due to the weather conditions.
He pointed out that the emergency teams will remain on alert around the clock, coordinating with the security forces and civil defense to monitor the weather situation and take necessary actions promptly.
Mahadin urged citizens and visitors to adhere to instructions and follow the authority's official channels for the latest updates, affirming that the reopening of the reserve will take place as soon as the weather stabilizes and the site is fully ready to welcome visitors.
