Prayer of Lightning and Thunder O Allah do not make us among the despondent

Khaberni - It is recommended for a Muslim, upon seeing lightning and hearing thunder, to recite the prayers narrated from the Prophet ﷺ, seeking protection, tranquility, and avoidance of harm.

The prayer of lightning is among those associated with natural phenomena that may evoke fear and anxiety in humans, where Muslims resort to reciting prayers seeking protection and peace when seeing lightning or hearing thunder.

Religious texts affirm that supplication at such times is commendable, especially during strong weather phenomena like thunder and lightning, as they remind us of the Creator's greatness and power.

When hearing the sound of thunder, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would recite: “Glory be to Him, whom the thunder praises and [so do] the angels from His awe”, a prayer that expresses surrender to Allah Almighty and recognition of His power and greatness, reminding that these phenomena serve as a warning to the people of Earth.

When rain accompanies lightning, it is recommended to pray for goodness and blessing, and among the narrated supplications are: “O Allah, let it be a helpful rain; O Allah, provide us with a relieving, nourishing, beneficial, and non-harmful rain”, along with praying that Allah makes the rain a mercy not a harm.

A Muslim may also pray: “O Allah, You are Allah, there is no deity but You, You are the Rich and we are the poor, send us rain and do not make us among the despondent”, affirming trust in Allah and asking for His mercy in times of hardship.

These prayers are part of the prophetic tradition that encourages remembering Allah and supplicating in various conditions, especially during natural phenomena that call for humility and reflection on Allah's power, giving a person a sense of tranquility and security.
