Calcium Deficiency in Women How to Protect Bones After Menopause

Khaberni - Health experts explained that women are more prone to calcium deficiency compared to men, primarily due to their consumption of lower amounts of this important mineral for bone health.

They clarified to the site Very well health that both men and women between 19 and 50 years need 1000 milligrams of calcium daily, while women over 51 years need 1200 milligrams, compared to 1000 milligrams for men in the same age group up to 71 years.

They added that blood test results do not always reflect the daily consumed amount of calcium; the body maintains calcium levels in the blood by pulling reserves from the bones when it is deficient in the diet.

Doctors confirmed that the menopause period poses a greater risk for bone loss, due to the decrease in estrogen hormone; this reduces calcium absorption in the intestines and increases the daily requirement for this mineral along with the necessity of getting enough "vitamin D".

They pointed out that dietary sources of calcium include dairy products such as milk, yogurt, cottage cheese and almond milk, as well as leafy vegetables, cabbage, green soybeans, and tofu. However, they noted that women who do not consume dairy products may need dietary supplements to meet their daily needs.

Regarding supplements, doctors recommended determining the daily amount consumed before starting them. There are two main types available: calcium carbonate, which is most commonly used and absorbed when taken with food, and calcium citrate, which is recommended when taking stomach acid medications and should be taken on an empty stomach. They warned against exceeding 2000 milligrams per day to avoid potential health risks.
