Who is Karin Bren who may become the first German President of Jewish descent

Khaberni - The name of German politician Karin Bren recently emerged as one of the prominent candidates to succeed German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in the 2027 elections, a step that could carry historical implications if she becomes the first female President of Germany from Jewish descent.

Karin Bren was born in 1964 in Amsterdam, Netherlands, to a family with Jewish roots, where her grandparents survived the Holocaust. Although she is not considered Jewish by strict religious definitions, she describes herself as a person with a Jewish biography and grew up in a distinctly Jewish cultural environment.
Her family experienced the fear of displaying Jewish identity in Germany after World War II, which has deeply influenced her political and personal consciousness.

Bren belongs to the Christian Democratic Union and currently holds the position of Federal Minister responsible for Education, Family Affairs, and Community, being the first person of Jewish descent to head a German ministry since the end of World War II.

She also chairs a Jewish forum within her party, working to combat anti-Semitism and enhance communication with Jewish communities.

Her Political Stances

Bren is known for her strong defense of liberal democracy and her warning against the rise of extremist currents in Germany and Europe. She has expressed strong opposition to the far-right Alternative for Germany party, even stating that she might consider leaving Germany if it came to power.

In terms of foreign policy, Bren is a supporter of Israel, especially after the attacks on October 7, 2023, while also emphasizing the need to adhere to international law.
Lauren Rose, the Executive Director of the World Jewish Congress office, says: "I truly appreciate that she took the time to meet the World Jewish Congress and other Jewish organizations," reflecting Germany's firm commitment to Jewish communities.

Bren sees the arrival of a person with a Jewish background to the presidency of Germany as a "strong symbolic event" that reflects the evolution of the relationship between Germans and Jews after decades of the Holocaust, despite her claim that this relationship has not yet reached "full normal status".
